TRAIN CARTS

Before Hy-rail vehicles (truck with train wheels) became available in the 1990's, railroads use speeders or train carts to inspect and maintain the tracks.  Today the North American Railcar Operators Association (NARCOA) has 2,000 members who are involved in restoring and running these "mini locomotives" on the railroads.

Meets are organized with various railroads and we pay a fee to operate.  We are viewed as a single train by the railroad and have sections of track blocked off and cleared for us.  But, we all get to drive our own speeders as long as we stay with the group.

The hobby allows us to see some of the most unique scenery available where most people would never be able to venture.  It's an added benefit to hear the click-clack of the track as well as the opportunity to drive a unique vehicle!
